Strategic Planning Feels Complicated. It Doesn’t Have to Be.
Good strategic planning isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about asking three questions that spark curiosity and conversation:
- Where are you today?
- Where do you want to be tomorrow?
- How will you get there?
It seems simple, but there’s so much more to it than that! The trick is slowing down long enough to answer them clearly, all while being honest about what matters.
Where are you today?
Start with what won’t change: your core purpose (your mission) and your values. These are your constants, the things that stay true even as everything else shifts.
Where do you want to be tomorrow?
Look ahead. Your vision isn’t about small goals; it’s about the big, maybe slightly intimidating ones. Think moonshot, not next step. What would be true of your organization if things went exactly right?
How will you get there?
Finally, make choices. Strategy involves deciding what to do, but also what not to do. Who do you serve? Do you work with intention? Where is your focus? Be specific and remember that vague plans don’t move anyone forward!
